On any given day you can find a woman being pulled in five different directions by ten different situations she feels all have to be settled before she goes to bed. I can testify that I am one of those women that have spent many sleepless nights figuring out something that was really nothing. It was so bad the stress caused my health to fail and the areas in my life that meant the most to me almost disappeared completely. After a full recovery of my health and doing a 180 lifestyle change, I realized my priority was everything and everyone but me.
Now that’s something you see a lot with women focusing on jobs, keeping the family happy and staying on-trend. We put so much effort into the things we think are necessary and vital to the image of a “good woman” we forget the woman herself. We forget that to keep the ship running the captain has to dock that same ship for routine maintenance now and then. That is exactly what I work towards never forgetting to do for myself.
Even if it’s just for five minutes a day, I remember to dock my ship. Docking my ship consist of several things I find joy in:
Binge-watching Netflix/Hulu – This takes the meaning of “Netflix and Chill” to a literal level, where I grab my food of choice (fast food), my blanket, and the TV remote. You can choose to do this alone or with a friend. However, if you do choose to have company over for your binge, you can not let it turn into a vent session. This is a simple way to relax and chill. All invited must follow that one rule. (Napping is allowed and encouraged.)
Shopping – It’s the costliest thing on the list, but retail therapy is a blessing. Just grab your keys, your wallet, that killer outfit you wear every time you want to feel like Beyoncé and your smile. If you choose to shop online you can still dress up in that Beyoncé outfit. We won’t judge.
Beach days – On these days I tend to grab a group of friends and head to the beach. We lay on the sand or play in the water while discussing whatever pops into our carefree minds. Once we’re nice and crispy from the sun, we head to the nearest Sonic for lunch or home for more girl talk. Nothing washes the stress away like a good swimsuit and some saltwater, but remember this is not a vent session. One mention of that coworker who stresses you out and the relaxation police will be on your tail.
Spa day – This one can be done one of two ways. You can either consult YouTube on ways to have a do-it-yourself spa day, or you can consult Google on the spa located nearest you. When I’m in need of some real downtime, I spend a few dollars on a mani/pedi because the massages they give are luxurious. If I’ve been good and following my ship docking routine, I can feel relaxed with an at-home manicure and a relaxing bath. In the end, though, it’s all up to you.
To kick start your ship docking procedures you can either take from my list or create your own. It’s your duty to take care of yourself first, or you won’t be able to take care of anyone else. I recommend taking some you time at least once a week and holding firm to the importance of doing so. You’ll find yourself more relaxed, more confident, and more energized for the next ten situations life simultaneously throws your way.
